A hop, skip and a jump from Spain and you’re in Morocco, a country that is less than 14 km from Europe at its closest point. A land of sand, spice and souks, Morocco, or the Kingdom of Morocco as it is formally known, is somewhat of a hit with the celebrities. Yves Saint Laurent has a bright blue property in the centre of Marrakech, La Majorelle, and even the perpetually cool David and Victoria Beckham enjoy the odd weekend there.
One visit and it is perfectly clear why. Every tourist taste can be satisfied in Morocco – medinas and mosques, bazaars and back-flipping acrobats, snake charmers and sweet mint tea. This is a country with a rich history of glory, savagery and religion which can be sensed on every corner. The cost of living in Morocco is between six to ten times cheaper than in the UK and as you would expect, the weather is superb with temperatures dipping no lower than 15ºC in the winter and hovering around 30ºC for the rest of the year The countryside is rich with contrasts – immense deserted beaches, camel tours, modern European-style stores, glamorous marinas, championship golf courses and skiing in the Atlas Mountains which reach up to 4300m and even possess permanent snow patches. Also, no jet-lag to contend with, Morocco is just one hour behind London. Most virgin visitors to Morocco become almost entranced by the wonder and mystery within hours of setting foot on land and are either overwhelmed by the deafening silence of the mountains and desert or by the deafening wails, flutes and drums in the cities.
